The production of so-called Barmer articles “braids, laces, and ribbons” brought prosperity and growth to Wuppertal. Around 1900, about 70% of all Wuppertal residents worked in the textile industry. Thus, it was not surprising that the brothers August and Otto Becker founded their ribbon factory at Dönberg around 1910. Initially, they produced silk, shoe, and lingerie ribbons on twelve Jacquard looms. Despite two world wars, the great-grandfather of today’s owner managed to maintain his business and later handed it over to his son-in-law Werner Stuhr. His sons Eberhard and Wolfgang, the namesakes of today’s Gebrüder Stuhr GmbH, managed the company for more than 30 years. By acquiring the textile works Rudolf Homberg (1912-1984) in the mid-80s, Stuhr became a market leader in Jacquard weaving. Homberg was the world’s largest manufacturer of Barmer articles in the early 60s with 1000 employees. Andreas Stuhr has been successfully leading the family business in its fourth generation since 2009.
