As early as 1527, the Duchy of Berg granted the cities of Barmen and Elberfeld the monopoly to bleach and sell yarns. At that time, bleachers, dyers, weavers, and machine factories settled in the region, and textile production in this densely populated section became the engine of industrialization in the 19th century. Up to 80 percent of the population lived off weaving.
